Why slowing down sometimes brings unexpected emotions to the surface
Have you ever noticed that the moment you finally go on holiday and begin to relax, unexpected emotions start appearing?
Perhaps you become tearful.
More anxious.
More irritable.
Or memories you've barely thought about for years suddenly pop into your mind.
If so, you're not imagining it.
When we're busy...our attention is occupied by:
work
children
commuting
responsibilities
Sometimes that busyness helps us keep going.
But it can also leave very little space to process what we've been carrying.
When the nervous system finally begins to slow down...
the things we've been pushing aside often become easier to hear.
This isn't necessarily a setback.
It may actually be a sign that your mind and body finally have enough breathing space to begin processing what's been waiting.
That can feel uncomfortable.
But it can also become an opportunity.
This is one of the reasons I value EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) so much.
Rather than simply talking about difficult experiences, EFT (also known as “Tapping”) helps regulate the nervous system while gently working through the emotions, patterns or beliefs that may be sitting underneath. It’s a way of exploring what we may be feeling without judgement.
Many people describe feeling calmer, clearer and lighter afterwards—not because they've ignored what they're feeling, but because they've been able to process it safely.
If your holiday time has brought unexpected thoughts or emotions to the surface, you don't have to work through them alone.
Often a few sessions are enough to create meaningful shifts and help you move forward with greater clarity.
If this resonates with you, perhaps consider it an invitation rather than something to push away. The emotions that surface when life slows down often have something important to tell us.
Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, navigating a life transition, or simply wanting to understand yourself a little better, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) can provide a gentle and effective way to move forward.
